Ancient Yoga For Modern Health

Everyone can practice and benefit from yoga, no matter how old. People from the ages of 6 to 80 can easily learn and practice yoga. Even professional athletes have studied it and there are special classes now for handicapped persons. yoga can be used to overcome a vast array of personal problems and is especially good for people who want to lose weight. The overall philosophy tends to promote a vegetarian diet and encourages the elimination of meat and dairy products.

Raga yoga is the mental practice of yoga and teaches practitioners five mental meditation techniques. yoga meditation concentrates on breathing and calms the nerves, overcomes anxiety, fear, worry, anger and negative emotions, and quiets the mind. Many people practice yoga meditation to calm themselves and relieve stress. It has been found that older people who practice yoga can often regain some characteristics of youth and vitality such as improved memory and better concentration. They become more flexibility, have better balance, endurance, coordination, and they feel more energized.

Yoga improves both physical and mental health when practiced regularly. Yoga works on every part of the human organism, both internal and external. Physical yoga consists of passive stretching and breathing exercises which improve muscle tone and stimulate internal organs. When combined with proper dietary habits, it cleanses the body and eliminates toxins and waste. The benefits from yoga cleansing techniques include support of normal regularity, stronger resistance to colds and flu viruses, and improved circulation throughout the body.

Westernized yoga classes mostly focus on learning physical poses, which are called "asanas". These yoga classes also include mediation and breathing exercises along with dietary guidelines. The majority of yoga classes are designed for purely relaxation and stress management, however many styles teach people to move their body in special ways to achieve greater flexibility, muscle tone, strength, and balance.

For most healthy people, yoga is a safe, non-aerobic exercise program; however, it is not without certain risks. Although yoga has provided many great health benefits for millions of people, it is not a substitute for proper medical care, nor is it to be taken lightly. Don't try learning yoga on your own from a video or book. It is much safer and better to work with an experienced and certified instructor to learn the proper way to avoid injury while performing the postures and stretches. Learn what your limits are and do not try to strain or stretch beyond them. Go slow in the beginning and make sure you warm up properly before each session. Cold muscles can cause injuries. Wear the proper loose-fitting clothing that allows freedom of movement. Stay hydrated, especially if practicing "hot yoga", which is done in warm and humid rooms to encourage perspiration. Ask questions of the instructor if you don't understand an exercise, or ask to see it demonstrated before you attempt it yourself. Above all, listen to your body and pay attention to what it is telling you. If you feel pain or faint, then stop immediately. yoga may cause some discomfort, but it isn't supposed to hurt. Stop immediately if you have chest pain, get overheated, or become dizzy, or weak. Get immediate medical care if your symptoms continue after you stop.

Get Better Results From Your Yoga for Weight Loss Program

Yoga has been around for an estimated 5,000 years, however there are still plenty of people who have not tried it. Today many of these people are considering using yoga for weight loss and general health. For anyone who wants to start, there are a few things to consider. Once you have that in place, the process of taking up yoga really is simple - and you'll be surprised how much fun you have. Not only that, certain yoga has been shown to be highly effective in reducing anxiety and building confidence. Yoga also used by professional sports athletes to increase flexibility and decrease the chances of serious injury. This ancient art form can truly offer something to everybody.

Without a doubt the most important aspect of any keep-fit regime is the overall priority on losing weight. Many will look at yoga and wonder how it can be useful in a weight loss program. Can you even use yoga for weight loss effectively? The honest truth is that classic forms of yoga which are recognizable to most people may not directly assist in weight loss. These forms of yoga are more suited for dexterity, flexibility and overall health. It's important to note that several yoga disciplines (ie. Kundalini, Bikram, etc.) are highly effective in helping lose weight.

For those looking to try and lose weight with yoga, it is vital to support your exercises with a balanced diet so that you get the nutrients needed. You then add daily exercise to burn excess calories. The majority of yoga forms practiced in Europe/North America are not cardio-vascular exercises (those which elevate your heart rate in order to burn extra calories). These yoga exercises do, however, increase your core strength and breath control and this in turn will make it easier to run, jog and perform other types of cardiovascular exercise that assist with burning fat.

If you have serious demands on your time or you cannot add two additional exercises to your weekly schedule, then you may be interested in Vinyasa or "flow yoga". This is a style of exercise which is markedly more athletic than the classic forms and involves more exacting poses. Vinyasa yoga will speed up the weight loss processes and get you to your final weight loss goal. Choosing the correct type of yoga is important, but it's safe to say using yoga for weight loss can be highly effective.

Yoga Can Help Lower Back Pain

Regular practitioners of yoga have long known that yoga can help with the debilitating and energy-zapping chronic lower back pain that is endured by so many people every day. Researchers who compared the results of 92 students who took weekly yoga classes against those who took part in stretching classes or used a self-help book on exercise found that the yoga classes gave the best results. Participants of the classes found that their back pain could be better managed than those who tried the other options.

Yoga comes in many different styles and some of these are more effective for back pain than others. It was noted by the Group Health Research Institute, who undertook the study, that the more therapeutic Viniyoga, Iyengar yoga and Hatha yoga all appeared to be most effective for people with back pain.

Participants of the study undertook classes that ran between 45 and 50 minutes long. They did between 5 and 11 simple poses and postures along with a guided deep relaxation session and some exercises in breathing. The results of comparing the outcomes of the study pointed at yoga being able to strengthen muscles in the lower back area, which led to a decrease in pain as opposed to any spiritual or mental effects. The study has triggered some excitement in the both the yoga and medical worlds. yoga can now be explored for potential in managing pain in other areas of the body.

Physicians who were involved in the study are keen that people must speak to their doctor or health care provider prior to starting any new exercise program. They have also suggested that the person would interview any potential new instructors for their understanding and knowledge of lower back pain issues. If you are interested in using yoga for your back pain, then please note that in addition to the approximately 50 minutes of yoga that was practised in the class, there was a supplementary 20 minutes of stretching on the days that the class was not held.

Another study in 2005 by the Annals of Internal Medicine also found that yoga could help combat lower back pain. Then in October 2007, guidelines on therapies to help lower back pain highlighted the regular practise of Viniyoga as something that can alleviate persistent back pain over a period of time by the American College of Physicians and the American pain Society. Yoga does not only make muscles stronger, it also promotes flexibility in addition to bringing oxygen to the tissues of muscles. The meditative benefits of yoga can also help with pain.

People who do regular meditation and breathing practices report that they have less pain than those who don't. They are able to respond to it in a different way as they understand how it can be modulated by their mind. yoga has many benefits and if you are a sufferer of chronic back pain - then it might be something that you should be looking into.

Yoga Ayurveda

Ayurvedic is a Hindu practice known as the 'science of life'. Yoga ayurveda falls into this category and it is a highly popular form.

There are many types of yoga practices in accordance with a person's ayurvedic structure. A certain arrangement of doshas is what an individual's formation relies on. It controls the tasks of the body and organizes conditions for growth. This also includes mental and emotional responses.

Ayurvedic Yoga:

One of the most popular ways of teaching this involves integrating the three styles of ayurveda known as vata, pitta and kapha. The person's ayurvedic structure e.g. age, gender, health, interest, personality and religious preference should be taken into account.

Traditional yoga in a class layout pursues the ayurvedic principles regarding the adjustment of the practices in accordance with the seasonal changes. The yoga instructor can set teaching tactics and design modified practice if knowledge concerning the pupils' structure is obtained. In this way, the ideal advantages can be gained from yoga sadhana. This term refers to all those yoga methods which are taken up to eliminate the flaws related to behavior. Taking the crux of this into consideration, the hatha yoga program consists of three core techniques.

The first step is to encourage sensitivity and elasticity. It includes matching the ether or air feature of vata which is the first dosha. Vinyasa practices are the most appropriate if they are implemented with ujjaye pranayama at regular intervals and they need to occur in a series. The practice will require approximately 60 seconds in executing a single cycle, partially of a round. This technique calls for the practice of the Sun Salutation. The key is to move gradually and consciously. The process requires focus on the inner wave movement and glottal echo of the ujjaye inhalation model. Comfort is obtained and sensitivity is enhanced. These are exposed to secret sentiments and thoughts which support insight.

Secondly, concentrate on encouraging energy and adequate heat to equalize pitta which is the water/fire feature. Breathing should move without any restraint but it is not of much importance. However, one should move actively and energetically in order to produce body heat. This procedure forwards fury and irritation which are altered into originality.

The last technique is all about cleansing the physical body, supporting strength and building up endurance. This equals the earth/water feature known as kapha. The sense of power attained throughout the recurring sequences and stances is emphasized. This allows the development of bravery, modesty, truthfulness and optimism. Laziness and unhappiness is eliminated by this method.
